The UK Sunflower Association has launched a web site, sponsored by NK Seeds, which offers farmers comprehensive information about the crop that it claims has potential for almost 50,000ha to meet with the UK’s current crushing and oils industries’ requirements.
“The latest new varieties are enabling sunflowers to become a viable crop which competes favourably with both autumn and spring sown breaks,” explains NK’s Nigel Padbury. “Already a number of growers have proved that sunflowers offer a number of benefits, for example the crop is spring sown and requires low inputs, no additional equipment is required and harvest allows entry in to winter wheat. Furthermore, sunflowers are proving to be a profitable crop.”
